Invention Summary:
Behavioral and physical assessments are conducted routinely for the diagnosis and proper treatment of individuals. Current assessment methods require patients and subjects to be physically present at laboratories and clinics. This requirement prevents certain sectors of the population from being properly evaluated or joining clinical trials due to the traveling required and physical constraints. There are no known existing approaches for remote and affordable behavioral analysis protocols.
Rutgers researchers have developed an affordable method to perform behavioral tests and clinical trials in a digitized and remote manner. Using off-the-shelf equipment, such as smartphones and webcams, assisted with provided sensors. the research team have demonstrated ease of dissemination of the protocols to individuals for assessing emotions and sensory-motor issues (digital biomarkers) This method uses a software application that facilitates dissemination of patient instructions and setup and use of remote data acquisition, ensuring proper understanding of performance of the assessment by patients and subjects, and fidelity of the data collected. This novel method is being validated through several ongoing clinical trials and holds the promise to enable clinical and behavioral assessments to a wider range of individuals in a cost-effective manner.
