Dr. Eileen Kowler is a Distinguished Professor in the Psychology Department in the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Maryland in 1978, and joined the Psychology faculty at Rutgers in 1980 after postdoctoral work at New York University. She is also a member of the graduate faculty of Biomedical Engineering and is on the Executive Committee of the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science. She edited the reference work Eye Movements and Their Role in Visual and Cognitive Processes (published by Elsevier), and served as Section Editor for Behavioral Physiology and Visuomotor Control of the journal Vision Research from 1995 to 2004. She has been on the editorial boards of the Journal of Vision and Cognitive Brain Research. Her laboratory has been supported by grants from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and NIH.
Invention Summary:
In class labs for perception and cognition are an integral part of in-person Psychology programs offered at most undergraduate institutions. However, there is no prominent examples of on-line versions of instructional laboratory classes in these topics that include extensive pedagogical and instructional materials sufficient to allow students to run laboratory exercises on their own in the context of an online course.
The work consists of instructional materials for online instructional classes in (1) Cognitive Psychology and (2) Sensation and Perception. The instructional materials consists of: (1) instructional videos that teach students how to use the custom-developed software, and how to use spreadsheet tools for analyzing results; (2) Powerpoint files that provide instructions and pedagogical background; (3) sample syllabi; (4) sample assignments for students; (5) detailed information for the instructors who are teaching this class; and (6) custom developed code in Python using the publicly available Pythion software package Psycho-Pi (http://psychopy.org).
